Our understanding of what it means to be sustainable is an ever-changing landscape. Here are some easy ways to help you become more sustainable in your home.
With climate change and global warming being a constant hot topic, excuse the pun, it is increasingly important to understand how we can adapt our lifestyles to be as sustainable as possible.
We’ve all heard about recycling and traditional sustainability methods but what else can we do to decrease our carbon footprint? Craft Furniture makes a point of being environmentally sensitive which is why we have made a list of a few ways to be more sustainable in our homes.
Home Sustainability Tips
Plastic-not-fantastic
Plastic straws have fast become taboo. If you can forgo using a plastic straw, then rather don’t use anything. The same can be said for coffee lids – use a reusable travel mug or skip the lid entirely. Plastic lids and straws are being quickly replaced with alternative materials, which are fairly easily accessible. Make the switch!
Stock the pantry
Did you know that you can stock most items in your pantry without buying individually wrapped items? There are many places where you can buy loose ingredients and fill your own containers. One of our favourite places to buy from is Nude Foods. This helps to reduce the plastic packaging that stores individually wrap items in.
Keep an eye on the temperature
As we move into the cooler months, central heating is essential. However, heating burns through a great deal of energy. Minimise the amount of heating needed by using carpets and rugs to retain warmth in a room, double glazing windows and making sure to turn off any heating elements you’re not using. Making eco-friendly design choices early on can not only save you money but also help out the planet.
Let there be light (but only when you need it)
Similar to your heating, try to only keep the lights on while you need them in an effort reduce your energy expenditure in your home. Utilise natural light where possible and use candles in the evening. Not only will this create a wonderful ambiance and diffuse a signature scent, but it will also create a sense of warmth in your home.
The secret is in the garden
Making eco-savvy choices in your garden can make a massive difference. Choosing indigenous plants that are suited to your region will result in your garden consuming the ideal amount of water. Speak to your local nursery about which plants will thrive in your area.
While we are always trying to recycle as much as we possibly can, there are additional ways we can conserve energy. At Craft Furniture we do our best to ensure that we are being environmentally friendly by giving back to the Earth. We do this by donating to One Tree Planted for every furniture piece that we create. To read more about this, click here.
