Why Ash vs. Oak? Choosing the Right Wood for Every Room.
When choosing furniture, the type of wood you select plays a major role in both the function and character of the piece. At Craft Furniture, we work primarily with premium hardwoods—two of the most popular being Oak and Ash. Both are strong, versatile, and beautiful, but each brings unique qualities that make it better suited to certain applications within your home.
Oak: Strength, Longevity, and Timeless Character
Oaks have long been seen as a symbol of strength and endurance — and with good reason. An oak tree can live for centuries and even absorb up to 50 gallons of water in a single day, making it a powerful presence in nature. As timber, oak carries these same qualities into your home.
Durability & Longevity:
Properly cared for, oak furniture can last 50 to 100 years or more. Its density and close grain structure make it naturally resistant to wear, insect attack, and fungal decay.

Beauty & Grain:
Oak is easily recognizable thanks to its distinctive grain patterns, which can range from straight to uniquely wavy. It also comes in a variety of natural hues, from pale golden tones to richer browns, allowing for design flexibility.

Applications:
Because of its strength and resilience, oak is a go-to choice for flooring, cabinetry, dining tables, and outdoor furniture such as decking and garden pieces. Its ability to withstand heavy use makes it ideal for heirloom-quality furniture intended to last generations.

Considerations:
Oak’s weight and density can make it more challenging to work with, often requiring experienced craftsmanship and robust tools. This can increase labour time, but the result is a piece that delivers in every measure that matters: longevity, beauty, stability, and value retention.
Oak performs beautifully indoors, but care must be taken when exposed to direct sunlight or fluctuating humidity, as this can cause expansion or warping if not properly sealed and maintained.
Ash: Versatility, Lightness, and Modern Elegance
Ash is another strong hardwood but with a character all its own. Known for its light colour and straight, even grain, ash offers a clean, contemporary look that suits modern interiors.
Strength & Flexibility:
Ash is prized for its excellent shock resistance, which is why it is often used for tool handles, sports equipment like baseball bats, and flooring in high-traffic areas. Despite its strength, ash is easier to work with than oak, allowing for more fluid, curved, and bespoke designs.

Aesthetic Appeal:
Its pale, creamy tones and fine, consistent grain make ash a favourite for furniture pieces where a softer, minimalist look is desired. It also accepts stains and finishes well, offering versatility in custom designs.

Applications:
Ash excels in indoor furniture such as chairs, tables, cabinetry, and architectural details. Its resilience makes it an excellent choice for high-use areas within the home.

Considerations:
Unlike oak, ash does not have a natural resistance to insects or decay, which makes it less suitable for outdoor use unless specially treated. Indoors, however, it stands the test of time with proper care.
Choose oak if you want furniture that is timeless, durable, and able to withstand outdoor exposure. Choose ash if you prefer a clean, contemporary look for indoor furniture that is strong yet versatile.
At Craft Furniture, we work with both oak and ash, carefully selecting and finishing each piece to ensure it fits beautifully into your home and lasts for years to come.
